The undefeated East Side Trojans have clinched their district championship with a victory over Velma Jackson on the road Friday night 52-24.

After winning the District Championship in dominating style, the 2011 East Side Trojan team is vying to be considered the best team that has ever played football at East Side. At 11-0-0 entering the playoff, the Trojans could become the first team in school history to win 12 or more games in one season. A team riddled with talent and off-the-field challenges have been able to maintain the team's focus, discipline and edge that head coach Tavares Johnson is instilling in these young men.

Friday night’s blowout game led to the Trojans scoring seven touchdowns. Jamarcus Walker, Jonathan Clark-Beamon, LaChristopher Lee, Brent Williams, Khiry Lucas and Quadre Butler each aided the Trojans with offensive touchdowns.

The defense was led by Michael Hurns with 13 tackles followed b Quatez Roby with nine tackles against Velma Jackson.

Not only was this a breakout game for the team as a whole, several individual players broke career records.

Senior Jarmarus Walker finished with (25) touchdowns for his East Side High career. He is currently ranked 8th all-time. He also moved up the rushing list with his 73-yard performance Friday. Walker passed all-time leading rusher Donald Montgomery who had 1,143 yards during his Trojan career. Walker finished his season with 1,167 yards.

Wide Receiver Khiry Lucas is now tied with East Side High School all-time leading touchdown receception leader Homer Crawford (1983-1985) with 15 receptions. But senior LaChrisptopher Lee holds the new title for the Trojans with 16 after two receptions for touchdowns in the Velma Jackson game. Lee has an all-time total receptions of 82 and an all-time receiving yardage of 1,079. Lee is the first and only wide receiver in East Side history with over 1,000 receiving yards.

Junior Michael Hurns became East Side's all-time leading tackler with 240 total tackles in his high school career. Only a junior, Hurns has the opportunity to reach 300 or more tackles in his high school career.

Sophomore Tavares Johnson, Jr. is re-writing the ESH passing book along the side of his father and head coach Tavares Johnson, Sr. He is the ESH career passing leader in completions with 237. He has had five 200-plus passing games and nineteen 100-plus  passing games. He has broken his own single season complete record of 113. He holds the ESH single-season passing yard record with 1,807. He is the first ESH quarterback to throw for over 1,600 yards in consecutive seasons. His 39 career touchdowns are only three short of Gregory Greens record of 42.

On Saturday, head coach Johnson was on the road bright and early headed to Middleton High School — the number four seed in the playoffs, to get some game film.
